Death, illness and financial woes stalk us all from time to time, and yet a lucky few seem to glide through life with hardly any insurmountable problems at all. Thanks to nothing more than chance, I have thus far avoided anything terrible happening to me personally, while several of those I love have been presented with unwelcome challenges that they did not deserve, and while friends with far more talent have come a cropper in their careers.
Can there be such as thing as continuous good luck? If so, it should be the central feature of my CV because for 35 years I’ve worked for amazing people, almost always in very pleasant circumstances. One day the luck will run out, of course, and then I will be glad to know that our industry’s generosity has enabled charities like Hospitality Action to exist, coming to the aid of those from the hotel and catering trade who find themselves in crisis, often through sheer bad luck. I must draw your attention to one exciting event in 2015. It’s called “Back to the Floor” and is a fabulous dinner in London where the thirty waiters and sommeliers will in fact be leading hoteliers and other grand figures from the industry, most of whom are quite unused to serving at table themselves. My little job is to act as compere, and possibly auctioneer, as when a similar event took place at Pennyhill Park a couple of years ago (see pic). It was one of the most enjoyable evenings ever.
The dinner is organised by Danny Pecorelli (MD of Exclusive Hotels) and Philip Newman-Hall (MD of Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons) and the money raised on the night goes straight to Hospitality Action. Date: April 17th. Venue: The Langham. Tickets: £150 each or £1,200 for a table of ten. To book: call Kate Offord on 0203 004 5516
Please buy a table if you can. I guarantee you and your guests an unforgettable night.
