Michelin has released its 2013 guide to Great Britain and Ireland a week ahead of schedule after the results were accidentally leaked on its website earlier today.
While the guide has not promoted any establishments to its coveted three-star-status, it has awarded three restaurants two stars: Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume in Cartmel, Cumbria; Michael Wignall at the Latymer at Pennyhill Park in Surrey; and Pierre Gagnaire and Mourad Mazouz’s Sketch in London. There are now four three-Michelin-starred and 20 two-Michelin-starred restaurants in Great Britain and Ireland.
Commenting on the awards, Michelin Great Britain and Ireland editor, Rebecca Burr said: “These are three equally worthy recipients of our two star award but each restaurant is very different in nature. Michael Wignall’s cooking offers a distinct sense of sophistication; Jean Denis Le Bras at Sketch has a much more ambitious style; and Simon Rogan’s cooking has steadily evolved and is now much more aligned with nature.”
A total of 18 restaurants have been awarded their first Michelin star, including eight in London: Alyn Williams at the Westbury; Dabbous; Hedone; Medlar; Trishna; St John Hotel; and Launceston Place as well as Tom Aikens Restaurant in Chelsea, which has regained its star after losing it following its closure for a six-month refurbishment.
In the rest of England seven establishments are celebrating their first star, including Heston Blumenthal’s Hinds Head in Bray, Berkshire; Paul Ainsworth at Number Six Restaurant in Padstow, Cornwall; Restaurant Tristan in Horsham, Sussex; Alimentum in Cambridge; the Bath Priory; Raby Hunt, near Darlington; Guy and Britt Manning’s Red Lion Freehouse in Wiltshire; and Thackeray’s Restaurant in Kent.
“I am very pleased to reveal that there are two further pubs included in this year’s star awards,” added Burr pointing to the Hinds Head and the Red Lion Freehouse.
“This suggests that the trend for British pubs acknowledging diners as well as drinkers, and striving to raise their standards of cooking, is continuing to move in a positive direction.”
In Ireland there are two new starred restaurants: Locks Brasserie in Dublin and Aniar in Galway. No new stars have been awarded in Wales or Scotland.
Seven restaurants have lost their stars in the 2013 Michelin guide for Great Britain and Ireland, including Coworth Park, the Dorchester Collection’s country resort near Ascot; Read’s in Kent, which had held a star for 20 consecutive years since 1993. In London Zafferano and Gauthier Soho lost their stars.
Michelin has handed out 39 new Bib Gourmands – recognising restaurants offering particularly good value for money – 11 of which are in London.
“In difficult financial times, establishments awarded a Bib Gourmand have been a real hit with our readers, proving that providing good value for money doesn’t have to mean compromising standards,” said Burr.
In total, 346 restaurants and 138 hotels have been included in 2013 Michelin guide to Great Britain and Ireland.
