Jason Atherton’s New York restaurant the Clocktower, which opened last month at 5 Madison Avenue, has gone straight into number two in the list of The Hottest Restaurants in Manhattan Right Now from Eater.
“This is Atherton’s first stateside restaurant, and it’s a splashy one,” effuses Eater, which profiles 20 Manhattan restaurants in the list.
The Clocktower, which is the multi-Michelin-starred chef’s first restaurant in the US, is situated in the iconic Metropolitan Life building which Ian Schrager has transformed into the New York Edition hotel in partnership with Marriott International. Restaurateur Stephen Starr is Atherton’s operating partner.
The news comes just as Atherton prepares to host a London-wide fundraising event for Hospitality Action this Sunday, called Social Sunday, across all his eateries in the capital.
With the ambition of raising more than £60,000 for the industry charity, he has pulled in some of his greatest chef friends, and some former bosses, to pair up with his head chefs for the day. Guest chefs will include Pierre Koffmann, Stephen Terry, Tom Aikens, Robin Gill and Isaac McHale.
The Clocktower, which Atherton describes as serving “contemporary cuisine with British sensibilities”, features a variety of dishes ranging from twists on traditional British fare to updated takes on more classic dishes. Handcrafted cocktails and a 300 bottle wine list will complement the cuisine.
