Pupils and parents from a Welsh comprehensive school will get to spend time together learning about food and nutrition after winning first prize in a National School Meals Week free prize draw sponsored by  Bernard Matthews Foodservice.

 

Ysgol y Gader in Dolgellau, Gwynedd, has won a family food appreciation workshop run by the Craft Guild of Chefs in a free online draw for Get Traditional day part of  National School Meals Weeks (NSMW) celebration of healthy school food.

 

The workshop, which is open to up to 12 pupils and their parents, will be delivered in the bilingual school’s food technology kitchen by a member of the UK’s leading chef’s association, developing an appreciation of food and the family through relevant food knowledge.

 

As part of the day, participants will learn how to prepare time and cost-effective, nutritionally-balanced food together, while the workshop will also cover basic food hygiene and equipment.

 

Duncan Marsh, general manager for Bernard Matthews Foodservice, which sponsored National School Meals Week’s Get Traditional Day this year, said there was a motivation behind the prize.

 

“According to LACA’s ParentPay research, 95.9% of parents agree with the statement, “My child should learn to cook at school”, and, as a business partner of the Craft Guild of Chefs, we felt the workshop could really help put this into practice, while getting the family involved,” he said.

 

“It is also an opportunity to show families and caterers how they can ‘lean on’ British turkey as a low in saturated fat ingredient that is also cost-effective and incredibly versatile, with each participant getting to make a turkey dish to take home with them at the end of the workshop.”

 

As second prize in the draw, five schools won tasting sessions with a home economist, demonstrating how to get the best out of British turkey and, specifically, how Bernard Matthews Foodservice’s Big Green Tick products for schools can help caterers meet government standards.

 

As third prize, 10 schools won a ‘Get Traditional ‘ theme day pack containing bunting, balloons and flags to help schools make the most of their Get Traditional day as part of National School Meals Week 2012.
